of Coastline and Rocky Reef Habitat
in Côte d’Ivoire

The Grand Béréby Marine Protected Area is the first Marine Protected Area in the country and safeguards key sea turtle habitat, hosting Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtles, Endangered Green Turtles, Olive Ridleys, and Leatherbacks. This protection also allows our partner to help local communities maintain sustainable fisheries and increase tourism––highly benefiting the local economy.

of Mountain Forest Landscape Protected
in Nepal

A critical step in a multi-year, multi-project mission in Nepal with our local partner, we established the Lungbasamba Landscape Biocultural Heritage and Ecotourism Special Conservation Zone in the Himalayas to protect key habitat against threats of road construction. Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Himalayan Black Bears, Indian Pangolins and Clouded Leopards all call the new reserve home.

of Protection for Indigenous Communities
in the Peruvian Amazon

This expansion is a critical step in our project to expand the Airo Pai Community Reserve, a multi-year effort with our local partner, CEDIA, to help indigenous communities gain legal title to their cultural land and stop deforestation in the Amazon. This follows another 332,935 acres that was protected by CEDIA earlier this year. Now, the reserve totals 880,254 acres that local communities will sustainably manage in perpetuity.

in the Tropical Andes
of Peru

The La Pampa del Burro Private Conservation Area lies in the heart of the tropical Andes of Peru, on the eastern slope of the mountain range as it extends toward the Amazon. An estimated 20,000 endemic plants and 75 endemic mammals live in this region. This purchase will lay the groundwork for future expansions, which will link La Pampa del Burro to the 247-acre property purchased in 2015.

of Expanded Protection for Cloud Forest
in Ecuador

The Numbala Cloud Forest Reserve houses lush tropical mountain forest habitat home to unique species like Endangered Andean Tapirs and Spectacled Bears. High levels of endemic plants are also safeguarded within this protected area, such as Podocarpaceae––a rare family of giant, native conifers that are an increasingly frequent target for loggers. Our new expansion will increase protection for the many beautiful species that call this reserve home.

in Ecuador

For over six years, Rainforest Trust and our local partner have been strategically expanding the Dracula Reserve, which encompasses critical portions of the beautiful Chocó-Tumbes forest in northwestern Ecuador. Our recent expansion will bolster protection for many rare and endemic orchids, as well as threatened species like the Critically Endangered Black-and-chestnut Eagle and the Brown-headed Spider Monkey––Ecuador’s most endangered mammal.

in Colombia

Rainforest Trust and our local partner recently created the K´õk´õi Eujã Natural Reserve in the beautiful Choco forest, which will highly benefit local indigenous communities, who can now maintain their land for future generations. The new reserve is home to threatened species like the Critically Endangered Alberico’s Robber Frog, as well as the Endangered Golden Poison Frog, Brown-headed Spider Monkey and La Costa Stubfoot Toad.

in Nepal

As part of a multi-year conservation mission in Nepal, we established the Topkegola Biocultural Heritage and Ecotourism Special Conservation Zone in September. A critical part of the Taplejung District in the Himalayas, the protected area is an indispensable habitat for many unique and threatened species like Endangered Red Pandas and Indian Pangolins, as well as Snow Leopards and Clouded Leopards.

in Papua New Guinea

Rainforest Trust worked with our local partner to expand the YUS Conservation Area in the lush, intact rainforests and shores of the Huon Peninsula. Iconic species like the Endangered Huon Tree Kangaroo, Eastern Long-beaked Echidna, New Guinea Pademelon and Leatherback Sea Turtle all benefit from this protection. This project is completely dependent on the indigenous communities, who will work together to safeguard resident species in perpetuity.

of Expanded Protection for Tropical Forests in Ecuador

Rainforest Trust and our local partner have been working to support species from both the Amazon and the Andes mountains through the creation and expansion of the Bigal River Biological Reserve. The reserve now encomapsses 1,950 acres of tropical forest and supports unique species like Endangered White Bellied Spider Monkeys and Maria’s Giant Glass Frog, as well as Military Macaws and Common Woolly Monkeys.
