Ioana Erdei, a piano teacher based in Riehen, Switzerland, was outraged by the August fires burning rainforests around the world. So were her students, and together they decided to do something to help.

“Everything became clear at the end of August. We all got the disastrous news about the Amazon fire and decided we should hold a concert dedicated to a good purpose, which – in my eyes– was indispensable,” said Ioana. “There was no doubt my students would want to play this concert –and its goal would be to support the environment by showing solidarity with and for the life we share on this planet.”

Ioana then began researching European and American non-profit organizations the concert would support, after reviewing for processes, trustworthiness and efficiency, she chose Rainforest Trust on behalf of her class. 

After working closely with Rainforest Trust staff, the class ultimately decided to support our work to preserve indigenous lands in the Peruvian Amazon. The concert was a success and raised $500 for the project. “I was very touched to see that these young kids knew about the fires and decided very quickly to do something about it using their musical talent,” said Ioana. 

It was important to Ioana to motivate her class to make a change, she strongly believes that conservation impact starts through grassroots initiatives. “I find the empowerment of local communities essential in the pursuit to protect such incredibly important areas,” said Ioana. 

“We teachers, we adults, are responsible for educating our students and children to respect and protect all life forms for future generations.” 

Rainforest Trust’s work would not be possible without the help of our supporters. Stories like Ioana’s inspire us to continue our work safeguarding species and habitat and protecting the planet.
