Just one year ago, lawless land-grabbing caused fires to rage through some of the world’s most critical rainforests. The reckless destruction endangered the livelihoods of millions of indigenous people. Habitat relied upon by countless species was destroyed. Millions of tons of stored carbon were released, disrupting our already fragile climate.
These tragedies spotlighted the importance of Rainforest Trust’s mission of over 30 years: to take the first, and most critical step in halting forest destruction by working with local partners to safeguard tropical forests as protected areas. Since August 2019 alone, we have:
- Protected nearly 1 million acres across the globe
- Helped 22 indigenous communities gain legal rights to their land, protecting more than 300,000 acres of Peruvian Amazon rainforest
- Our solution is working – 92% of areas ever protected with our support have lost less than 5% of their forest
But our work is far from over.
According to Inpe, the Brazilian Amazon is experiencing its worst fires in a decade. Over 32,000 hot spots were recorded in September – a 61% increase from 2019.
Healthy rainforests are critical to a healthy planet. The COVID-19 virus would have never spilled over to humans had wildlife remained secure in protected areas. Creating protected areas is the most effective way to prevent deforestation activity that leads to fires, safeguards biodiversity, keeps carbon stored safely away, and maintains the health of all species on our planet.
